BJP working president Jagat Prakash Nadda is set to formally take over the reins of the party from Amit Shah today when the BJP will initiate the process of electing a new chief for the party. Nadda has been the working president for the BJP for the last seven months.

The 59-year-old BJP leader was handpicked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the top post after he was part of the council of ministers during the first tenure of Modi as PM.

The decision to make Nadda working president was taken after Shah was made the home minister, and according to the rules of BJP, a person cannot hold more than one post whether in the party or in the government.

So, as Nadda is set to take over as the new head, here’s few facts about him that will make you know him better:

1. Nadda was the health minister in the first term of Modi government.
2. Nadda has served at various levels in BJP, including being a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
3. Nadda formally came into public life in 1993 when he first became a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in home state Himachal Pradesh.
4. The minister was detained for 45 days for protesting against the imposition of Emergency in 1975.
5. Born on 2 December, 1960 to Narain Lall Nadda and Shrimati Krishna Nadda, the minister studied at the St. Xaviers School in Patna.
6. He later shifted from Patna to Himachal Pradesh to pursue LL.B. from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.
7. Nadda’s big break in national politics came in May 2010 when the then BJP president Nitin Gadkari made him the general secretary of the party under his leadership.
8. Soon after becoming part of BJP’s national politics plan, Nadda became a member of Rajya Sabha in April, 2012, and handled Uttar Pradesh during 2019 general elections.
9. Nadda is married to Mallika Nadda and the couple has two sons.
10. Nadda’s wife also comes from a political background. Nadda’s mother-in-law Jayshree Banerjee is former Lok Sabha Member of Parliament and a senior BJP leader from Madhya Pradesh.
