As the whole wide world grapples with the coronavirus pandemic, India is facing an even harsher front in the form of an extremely severe cyclonic storm Amphan.

The states of West Bengal and Odisha witnessed huge havoc as an extremely severe cyclone packing winds of up to 190 kmph roared into West Bengal, dumping heavy rain and leaving a trail of destruction that left at least two people dead, officials said.

Trees were uprooted and homes toppled in Kolkata in West Bengal.

The storm is the first super cyclone to form in the Bay of Bengal since 1999. Though its winds have now weakened, it is still classified as a very severe cyclone.

Amphan began hitting the Sundarbans, a mangrove area around the India-Bangladesh border home to four million people on Wednesday afternoon, before carving north and north-eastwards towards Kolkata.
