Necessity is the mother of invention. This has been recently realized in the aftermath of a spread of the Coronavirus at the cross-roads of security paradigm and health of the personnel onboard an aircraft carrier.

A chip has been unveiled by the Pentagon which can detect the presence of Covid virus and can help in its removal from the body. This invention was necessitated after a huge outbreak of the virus on the Nimitz class nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt.

The chip is the result of years of work carried out by Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) targeted at prevention and end of pandemics.

Retired Colonel Matt Hepburn, an army infectious disease physician revealed the working of the chip on CBS.

The basic idea for the chip was arrived at after 1271 infections were recorded in the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt in 2020.

The chip is inserted under the skin in a tissue-like gel and is designed to continuously test the patient’s blood. Apart from this chip, Pentagon scientists have also developed a revolutionary filer that can remove the virus from the blood through a dialysis machine.

While showing off the chip & its workings, Col Hepburn explained that one needs to put the microchip underneath her/his skin and then the chip tells about the reactions going on in the body, and a particular signal given by the chip will imply that the person will have symptoms tomorrow. Therefore, in a way the chip helps the soldier stay alert in case she/he has been infected, given the feature of the chip whose function borderlines with anticipating and predicting the symptoms, and in turn the disease.

Col. Hepburn also added, “It is like a ‘check engine’ light. Sailors would get the signal, then self- -administer a blood draw and test themselves on site.”

He further stated, “We can have that information in three to five minutes. As you truncate that time, as you diagnose and treat, what you do is you stop the infection in its tracks.”

He also stated that his team has invented a filter, which when placed on a dialysis machine would remove the virus from blood. The Physician Colonel went on to state that the four-day treatment had been given to Patient 16, the spouse of a military member, who was in organ failure & septic shock.

Col Hepburn also said, “You pass it through, and it takes the virus out, and puts the blood back in.” He further added that within days of the treatment the patient had made a full recovery. FDA has approved the treatment, which has been used to treat almost 300 sick patients.
