The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided to go solo in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections in spite of pitch for unity by a large section of non-BJP parties.
The AAP, which won a remarkable 67 seats out of 70 in the 2015 assembly elections, however fared poorly in the Lok Sabha elections this year in which the party failed to win any seat in the state.
“The AAP will contest the assembly election alone as it is well set to humble the BJP in the election,” said AAP Rajya Sabha MP and member of Political Affairs Committee (PAC) Sushil Gupta.
“The AAP is on a strong wicket in Delhi and it will defeat the BJP alone in the assembly election,” Gupta said in the context of his party getting decimated at the hands of the BJP in the last parliamentary election.
Gearing up for the polls, AAP seems to have decided to ride high on its work, instead of getting entangled in Modi-bashing and verbal wars.
The party recently announced free rides for women in public transport, as the ‘bhai dooj’ gift.A day after his government launched free bus rides, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, boarded a bus to gauge the impact of the scheme.
The chief minister said he was enthused by the feedback received from the women, who were not only enjoying the free rides, but also felt safe using public transport due to government’s move to deploy marshals.
“I boarded a few buses just now to get direct feedback from women. In addition to students, working women, women going for shopping, I also met a few who have to visit doc (doctor) regularly. They are also v (very) happy,” Kejriwal tweeted.
Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party government had both “appealed to and challenged” other state governments to make bus rides free for women. AAP claimed such schemes will help in empowering women and their economic development.
