Kapil Mishra, former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader-turned BJP candidate for the Delhi election, has controversially compared the February 8 polls to an “India-Pakistan” match.
Mishra, who is the BJP’s candidate from Model Town, made the comments while lashing out at anti-CAA protesters in Shaheen Bagh and other places in the city.
Mishra’s tweets have however costed him a showcause notice by the Returning Officer (RO).
The notice has listed Mishra’s tweets posted on Thursday and said, “Clause 1(1) of the Model Code of Conduct stipulates that no party or candidate shall include in any activity which may aggravate existing differences or create mutual hatred or cause tension between different castes and communities, religion or linguistic.”
In a series of tweets, Mishra said, “India vs Pakistan 8th February Delhi. There will a contest on Delhi Roads between India and Pakistan on February 8.”
“Pakistan has already entered Shaheen Bagh and small pockets of Pakistan are being created in Delhi,” he added.
In another post, Mishra asserted that the BJP will win the February 8 elections and Kejriwal will resign from his post when votes are counted on February 11.
Mishra, who was close to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and in the inner circle of AAP, had a bitter parting with both after he publicly accused Kejriwal of corruption.
Without any formal announcement, the 39-year-old even campaigned for BJP candidates in last year’s national election. He joined the BJP in August.
Mishra was recently in news when a video of him shouting incendiary slogans — “desh ke gaddaron ko, goli maaro saalon ko” — surfaced on social media. Mishra made the statement when he led a march in support CAA on 20 December. At that time, following the controversy, the Delhi BJP had distanced itself from Mishra’s march.
The results of the Delhi election will be announced on February 11. AAP, which won 67 of Delhi’s 70 seats in the previous election, hopes to repeat its successful run in the capital. The BJP, however, is confident that Arvind Kejriwal’s party will face anti-incumbency for not performing in the past five years.
