With an aim to strengthen electoral roll in the country, the Election Commission of India has come up with an Electors Verification Programme. The move seeks to update electoral rolls through crowdsourcing.
Under the programme, a voter from each family will get a username and password, allowing a person to upload all documents related to electoral registration and tag similar details about his or her family members.
With this, the election commission aims to bring in transparency in the system, thereby increasing the level of communication between the voters and the commission. The programme is also expected to improve the health of electoral rolls and to provide better electoral services to citizens.
“It is an important opportunity for all voters to verify and authenticate their details. Participation of people is paramount to the success of the drive. I urge all to come forward and ensure an error-free Electoral Roll as it is the heart of the electoral process,” said Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa.
Electors can verify their details through “Voter Helpline” mobile app, NVSP portal or by visiting office of the Electoral Registration Officer. Electors can also check, authenticate and verify their details online in just five easy steps.
Authentication of entry can be done by furnishing scanned/DigiLocker copy of one of the following documents: (i) Indian passport (ii) driving licence (iii) Aadhaar card (iv) ration card (v) identity card for government/semi government officials (vi) bank passbooks (vii) farmers’ identity card (viii) PAN card (ix) Smart Card issued by RGI, or (x) latest bill for water/electricity/telephone/gas connection.
The ‘mega million’ launch will take place in all states and Union territories. It will be done by 36 CEOs at the state headquarters level, by 740 district electoral officers at the district level and by BLOs and electoral registration officers in around one million polling stations, the EC said.
