Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said India would put to use its share of water from the rivers flowing to Pakistan and ensure that every single drop is used for country’s farmer.
Modi, who was addressing an election rally at Charkhi Dadri in Haryana, said the work on the same had already been started. He added that river waters rightfully belonged to India had been flowing to Pakistan for the last 70 years and it would not happen any more.
“For the last 70 years, the waters that belonged to India and farmers of Haryana were going to Pakistan. Modi will stop it and bring it to your households,” he said.
“This water belongs to farmers of Haryana, Rajasthan and the country and we will get it.. Work towards realisation of this has been started and I am committed towards it. Modi will fight your battle,” he asserted.
India shares its water with Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty. For many decades, India has allowed its share of water also to go to its hostile neighbour. The Modi government is now keen to reclaim its share.
This is not the first time that India has threatened to stop its share of unused water from Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej that has been flowing to the neighboring country. In a tweet on February 21, 2019, the then Union Water Minister Nitin Gadkari had asserted that the government will stop the sharing of water with Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Modi, who is fighting under the leadership of chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar in the upcoming Haryana polls, hailed the Khattar government saying that the leadership succeeded in removing corruption from the state. “Now people who have the merit will get jobs. The legacy of promoting candidates for government jobs is no longer prevalent in Haryana. The tradition of giving government jobs to people who are close to power has ended,” Modi added.
