Haryana police have accepted the resignation of wrestler BabitaPhogat from the post of a police officer in the state.
Babita had put down her papers a day after she and her father Mahavir Phogat joined the BJP in the presence of working president JP Nadda.
Speculations are rife that Babita, who recently joined the Bhartiya Janata Party, quit the police force as she is likely to contest the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
According to media sources, Babita is likely to contest from Dadri or Badhra assembly seat.
Welcoming the Phogats in the party, Union Minister Rijuju had praised Mahavir Singh Phogat calling him a ‘role model’ for the society. He was all praises for BabitaPhogat too sharing that she could continue to be associated with sports, even after joining the party.
BabitaPhogat has been a vocal supporter of the BJP. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre scrapped Article 370, which provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir, she had voiced her support on Twitter.
“As a government servant, I couldn’t have been a part of any political party. Hence, I had submitted my resignation. I wanted to join a nationalist party and I believe that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar think about the welfare of the nation,” said Babita, who was posted as sub-inspector at Madhuban.
“Being given a ticket to contest elections is not in my hands. Whatever the party decides, I will be ready for the role. I have been meeting people from the villages in my district and listening to them. My aim is to listen to the people and to work for their betterment,” she added.
Then chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had appointed Babita in the Haryana Police in the sports quota after she won the gold medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
