Officials said that during the early hours on Wednesday, three militants, including a Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander, were killed in a gunfight with security forces in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. The LeT commander killed has been identified as Abu Huraira.

IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar said, “Pakistani LeT commander Aijaz alias Abu Huraira killed alongwith two local terrorists. Congratulations to police and security forces.”

IGP Kumar stated that search operation escalated into gun-fight. He also added that arms and ammunitions have been recovered from the site of encounter.

Police said that the gunfight started in Pulwama town post-midnight. Officials stated that post-midnight a joint party of security forces started searches following inputs about the presence of militants in the area, which led to gunfire.

An army spokesperson said, “A joint operation was launched last night based on J&K Police inputs. The area was cordoned and contact was established.”

In a tweet, police said, “Incriminating materials, including arms and ammunition, were recovered. Searches are going on.”

In this month, security forces have eliminated many militants in Jammu and Kashmir. Three LeT militants were killed in an exchange of fire with security forces, in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, on July 10.

On July 8, police said that four militants were killed in two separate gunfights in Kulgam and Pulwama districts in South Kashmir.

Hours after his detention by security forces in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, Hizbul Mujahideen militant commander Mehrajuddin Halwai was killed on July 7. Police said that Halwai was killed after he was taken to locate his weapon from a hideout where he allegedly picked up his rifle and started firing.

The increased frequency of encounters in J&K is coincidentally found during a period when the centre and the other non-BJP parties in J&K, led by Gupkar alliance, held talks with regards to the status of J&K.
