The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to return to power in Haryana.

The party has reached an agreement to form a coalition government in Haryana with the JannayakJanta Party (JJP) of Dushyant Chautala – who emerged as a major swing force in the October 21 assembly elections.

The newly formed alliance is likely to stake claim to form the government on Saturday.

According to the agreement between the two parties, the BJP’s Manohar Lal Khattar will continue to be chief minister while the deputy chief minister will be from JJP.

“Accepting the mandate by the people of Haryana, leaders of both parties have decided that BJP-JJP will form the government together in Haryana. CM will be from BJP and deputy CM will be from JJP,” BJP President Amit Shah said.

The BJP-JJP pact was announced after Chautala met BJP president Amit Shah and working president JP Nadda in New Delhi at the end of a day of fast-moving political developments after the ruling party ended up with 40 seats in the 90-member Haryana assembly, six seats short of a simple majority.

“Accepting the mandate by the people of Haryana, the leaders of both parties have decided that the BJP and JJP will form the government together in Haryana. The chief minister will be from the BJP and the deputy CM from the JJP,” the BJP chief said.

In Haryana, the ruling BJP emerged as the single largest party by winning 40 seats but fell short of the halfway mark by 5 seats. Congress, on the other hand, won 31 seats. The Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) was victorious in 10 constituencies, making it a possible kingmaker, along with 7 Independents.

The BJP is also banking on the support of the sole INLD MLA, Abhay Chautala, Dushyant’s uncle, who has said that he could not align with the Congress “on principle”.
