The ongoing episode of Sachin Pilot camp’s defection in Rajasthan along with the earlier episodes of Madhya Pradesh clearly depicts that elections in India have become meaningless. India has free elections but we cannot call it fair in its entirety. The news headlines of defection pops up every now and then, that now even a common man can predict the fate of Indian Politics that BJP is going to install its government everywhere by hook or crook.

Media, courts, election commission, tax agencies, bureaucracy — all these institutions favour the Indian government in a way.

India is a democratic country on paper having a lengthiest written constitution but sadly the Economist’s democracy index describes India as “Flawed Democracy”. Now you may be a little scared as international index has predicted this, since we have a fetish for getting recognized internationally.

We like to boast when some international agencies like IMF, Fitch, World Bank etc lauds our efforts and soon get disheartened by their dissents (although not ready to accept). This is a clear sign that we have become dependent on ratings and a bit arrogant while accepting flaws.

This is a dangerous phase which has an English expression accorded to it – “Resting on one’s Oars”. We don’t want to improve and shed away our flaws saying “Mera Bharat Mahan’ and Nowadays “Atma nirbhar Bharat” also sounds the same to me. We don’t have a plan to fight the corona virus but we desperately want to become a “Vishwa Guru’. Indians always get swayed away by their emotions we have shown that time to time whether it is Pulwama episode or the recent Boycott Chinese product slogan chanted by gullible citizens of India.

Our democracy is indeed going on the path of Singapore. The ‘Singapore model’ has been called benevolent dictatorship, “authoritarianism with democracy,” a “hybrid system” Singapore has a parliament and regular elections every five years. The elections are not rigged as in, say, Russia. Yet the country’s ruling People’s Action Party has been in power continuously since 1959.

This is the true stage which Indian Government is going through. The government has stopped listening to criticisms they just wanna show us a rosy picture. In case of Corona Virus cases too, we are being shown just the recovery rates so that the cracks in the systems can be covered.

The ‘Chalta hai’ attitude has now become ingrained in our system. We as citizens have stopped wracking our brains and have become senseless in approach. We have to stop this until it’s too late.

Doesn’t it scare you? These incidents indeed makes us believe that we are truly inching towards an era depicted by the book or the series ‘Leila’. You may call it an exaggeration but we should exaggerate a little, just to be cautious.

In the case of Coronavirus pandemic also we should be scared otherwise the flawed attention of the government is going to kill us. The political scenario also demands the same attention by us. We should be vigilant and cautious while voting the next time.
