Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Mizoram on Thursday held elections for village councils and local councils but maintained the Covid-19 protocol, including social distinctions.
More than 500 village councils and more than 70 local councils went to the polls.
However,voting was not held in the areas falling under the three autonomous district councils in the Siaha and Lawngtlai districts of South Mizoram.
According to the Mizoram State Election Commission, voting ended smoothly.
Altogether 4,54,180 voters were eligible to cast votes in 558 village councils and 2,18,758 in 83 local councils under Aizawl Municipal Corporation.
The state election commission had postponed the election to 24 local councils due to the epidemic.
The tenure of the village councils expired on 7 May and was extended to 7 September.
“I participated in the #Mizoram General Election to Village Councils & Local Councils, 2020. Thank you to all election officials and every participant for providing a safe platform for many voters to exercise our constitutional franchise in the midst of this epidemic,” he tweeted.
In view of the epidemic, some political parties had sought to postpone the election.
Congress spokesperson Lallianchunga said that We were not in favor of the election because we were concerned about the health of the people, but the MNF was desperate.
Earlier, Assam postponed the elections to the Autonomous Bodoland Territorial Council.
The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections in Tripura and Panchayat elections in Arunachal Pradesh were postponed due to the epidemic.
