Legendary choreographer Saroj Khan passed away on Friday leaving her fans shattered. She was admitted to Guru Nanak Hospital in Mumbai on June 17, owing to difficulty in breathing due to cardiac arrest. She was 71.

Fondly known as ‘master ji’, Saroj Khan choreographed many famous songs like ‘Ek Do Teen’, ‘Dola Re Dola’, ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Laga’, ‘Hawa Hawai’, ‘Yeh Ishq Haaye’, and many more.

Born as Nirmala Nagpal on November 22, 1948, Saroj khan migrated to India with her family after the partition. She began her career as a child artist in the film ‘Nazarana’ at the very small age of three.

Saroj Khan was spotted by their family doctor who belonged to the industry.

She learned dancing from her renowned dance director husband B Sohanlal and later started working as his assistant choreographer. With the movie ‘Geeta Mera Naam’ in 1974, she started her journey as an independent choreographer.

She got married at the age of 13 to B. Sohanlal, who was 43 years old when they got married.They, however, separated within a few years.

Saroj Khan was often rejected for her western dressing style.

After working hard for years, Saroj gained popularity with the late actress Sridevi’s song ‘Hawa Hawai’. Then both Sridevi and Saroj delivered many hit numbers from the movie Chandani and Nagina.

Later khan also did some famous songs with actress Madhuri Dixit such as ‘ Ek do teem’, ‘Dhak dhak karne laga’, and ‘tama tama loge’. And from there on she became one of India’s most famous Choreographers.

She got three National Awards for Best Choreography, first for song Yeh Ishq Haaye from the movie Jab We Met, second for a Tamil-period drama Sringaram and third for the song Dola Re Dola from the movie Devdas.

Some of her best work is for movies such as Tezaab, lagaan, Devdas, Guru, Tanu weds Manu, Kalank and Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi.
