After Congress leader Rahul Gandhi faced flak over flying to Bangkok just ahead of assembly elections, now party’s senior leader Sonia Gandhi’s recent act is under scanner.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi missed her only election rally in Haryana ahead of the upcoming assembly polls. She could not attend owing to ‘unavoidable reasons’.
The party’s most prominent leader in the state, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, also chose to skip this rally in Mahendragarh on Friday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an additional rally in Hooda’s stronghold of Sonipat.
Rahul Gandhi filled in for her mother at the rally, which was just his second in the state after he addressed one in Nuh earlier while his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra skipped campaigning in the state all together.
“Shri @RahulGandhi ji will be addressing a public meeting at Mahendragarh today, at 2 PM. @INCIndia President Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji will not be able to attend the meeting due to unavoidable reasons (sic),” the party’s deleted tweet said.
While Modi has held over 25 election rallies in both Haryana and Maharashtra where the ruling BJP is trying to make history by returning to power, Sonia Gandhi has not held public meetings. Rahul Gandhi has held a total of seven public meetings across both states.
She has reduced her public engagements particularly, those which are election related, in the recent past and is yet to address any election related meeting ever since she returned as the party president in August.
Modi took a dig at the Congress at his rally in Hisar on Friday, saying Haryana had seen a video of how Congress leaders were counting seats outside Parliament and arguing about their dismal prospects in the state.
