The upcoming big elections are that of Bihar in October 2020 and that of West Bengal in the coming year.
The preceding elections in Bihar was secured by a combination of the JD(U)-RJD and Congress. However, the government fell after Nitish Kumar of the JD(U) aligned with the BJP. It was a clever move by BJP to sideline the RJD in the Bihar polity. On the other hand, the same BJP could not stand a chance against the formidable support base of Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool congress which easily retained the helm of Bengal politics in the 2016 polls.
India is all set to go through a back-to-back series of state ballots in the coming months.
After the Bihar elections of 2020, BJP would be looking to drive it’s agenda in the poll-bound West Bengal eyeing beneficiaries in a bid to match upto the TMC and come to power for the first time in the state.
The party has been especially ear-marking 3.5 crore beneficiaries of Jan Dhan accounts in West Bengal and 2.38 crore accounts in Bihar.
The two states could prove to be among the toughest electoral battlegrounds the ruling party alliance is likely to face in the coming months starting October and into 2021. According to the latest data, West Bengal has more that 7 crore registered voters while Bihar has 7.12 crore voters.
Upcoming fights for the two state assemblies will be interesting especially after the pandemic induced lockdowns, Amphan, the possibility of Sharad Yadav returning to JD(U), & the historic contraction of the economy.
