Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has again landed himself in trouble. And interestingly the reason remains the same. The leader, who has always created controversies with his fiery statements, has again created a stir by making another comment without mincing his words.
On Thursday, at a mega rally in Jharkhand, where assembly elections are being held, Rahul Gandhi had targeted the government on crimes against women and said: “Narendra Modi had said ‘Make in India’ but nowadays wherever you look, it is ‘Rape in India’.
While the political parties and people could not digest this statement, Rahul fuelled things further when he refused to apologise and said, “My name is not Rahul Savarkar, I am Rahul Gandhi. I will never apologise for speaking truth and nor will any Congressman do so. It is Narendra Modi and his assistant Amit Shah who has to apologise to the country for destroying India’s economy.”
Needless to say, his comment raged not just the BJP, who said that ‘Rahul Jinnah is more appropriate name for Rahul Gandhi’, even the Shiv Sena slammed Rahul for taking a dig at Veer Savarkar, adding that the party respected Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
Rahul’s comments have added to the string of such statements that have created stir and raised many eyebrows in the past. Take a look at some such comments by the Gandhi scion:
- Rahul Gandhi loves taking a dig at PM Narendra Modi. Back in 2016, addressing a rally and targeting the PM over the surgical strikes, Rahul accused Modi of indulging in “khoonkidalali” with the blood of the Indian soldiers. He said, “Jo hamarejawanhainjinhoneapnakhoondiyahai, Jammu and Kashmir meinkhoondiyahai, jinhone Hindustan keliye surgical strike kiyehain, unkekhoonkepeecheaapchhupehain. Unkiaapdalalikarrahe ho. Yeh bilkulgalathai.”
- Speaking in the Lok Sabha in March 2016, Gandhi said: “Nobody who has black money will be jailed under Modi’s ‘Fair and Lovely’ scheme. All those who have black money can make it white under this scheme.”
- Speaking at an event in August 2013, Rahul invited flak and was accused of ‘mocking the poor’ when he said,“Poverty is just a state of mind. It does not mean the scarcity of food, money or material things. If one possesses self-confidence, then one can overcome poverty.”
- Rahul, in January 2013 while speaking atthe All India Congress Committe session in Jaipur, said, “It (Congress) is a funny party. It is the largest political organization in the world but perhaps does not have a single rule or regulation. We create new rules every two minutes and then dump them. Nobody knows the rules in the party.”
- Gandhi, making a 16-minute speech in Parliament, ridiculed BJP’s slogan ‘GharGhar Modi’, when he said, “There is a new slogan in villages: arhar Modi, arhar Modi, arhar Modi.”
