President Donald Trump said Friday he will bar fast-growing social media app TikTok from the United States as American authorities have raised concerns the service could be a tool for Chinese intelligence.

US officials and lawmakers in recent weeks have voiced fears of the wildly popular video platform being used by Beijing for nefarious purposes, but the company has denied any links to the Chinese government.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said: “As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States.”

Following the move by Trump, reports say, TikTokis in talks to sell itself to Microsoft.

Trump is weighing several other courses of action, including an executive order that could use the vast powers of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to bar certain foreign apps from U.S. app stores. The Trump administration has also considered whether to add TikTok’s parent to a so-called “entity list,” which would prevent it from purchasing U.S. products and services without a special license, said people with knowledge of the matter.

Two of the top-selling newspapers have claimed that Donald Trump wanted to order the sale of TikTok’s US operations by China-based ByteDance, citing sharing of data with Chinese intelligence as the reason.
