Your TO-DO List if you are travelling when train services resume from May 12

In a major move, Indian Railways on Sunday announced its plan to gradually restart passenger train operations from 12 May.

At the beginning a total of 15 pairs of trains (30 return journeys) will run from New Delhi to various parts of the country.

These special trains will be run from New Delhi Station to Dibrugarh, Agartala, Howrah, Patna, Bilaspur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Madgaon, Mumbai Central, Ahmedabad and Jammu Tawi, the government notice stated.

Initially, all air-conditioned services will begin on 15 Rajdhani routes and the fare would be equivalent to that of the super-fast train, it said.

Union Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal also took to Twitter to inform, bookings for these trains will start at 4 pm on May 11.

Here’s a look at your To Do list, if you are planning to travel when the services resume.

• The passenger has to be present at the station at least an hour before, to get the screening done and other Corona protocols can be followed.
• The passengers can only avail tickets only through online booking from the IRCTC site.
• It is mandatory for passengers to download Arogya Setu App in their mobiles.
• Only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to board the trains.

Here are few things that you have to keep in mind as they are not allowed to do.

• No counter tickets will be issued as the ticket booking services at stations will remain closed.
• Only passengers with valid confirmed tickets will be allowed to enter the railway stations.
• No symptomatic patient will be allowed to board the train.

Odisha sees a surge in coronavirus cases, here’s why

With the number of coronavirus cases reaching towards 60,000-mark, Odisha has witnessed its highest single-day surge so far.

The state has reported around 78 new cases on Friday to take its tally to 287.

Earlier, Odisha was seen reporting the lowest numbers of COVID-19 cases, but in the past two days, 107 cases have been discovered.

The sudden surge of Covid-19 positive cases is related to migrant workers who are returning to the state.

The cases mostly reported from Odisha’s five districts Ganjam, Khurda, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Baleshwar. Out of these five Districts, Ganjam is the most affected one, with hundreds of migrant workers returning.

Around five lakh more are expected to arrive over the next few weeks, and the state government has arranged an equal number of quarantine beds in around 12,000 makeshift medical camps.

The Surat district administration on Thursday cancelled trains from Surat to Odisha following a Odisha High Court’s order. The Odisha HC has ordered to bring the stranded migrants into the state only after conducting their Covid-19 tests in the host states.

Surat-based power looms and textile units employ thousands of people from Odisha who are now stranded and out of job due to the coronavirus-enforced lockdown. Although,before the situation escalated, police persuaded the restless migrant workers, who numbered in hundreds, to disperse.

Till now, as many as 18 Shramik Special trains, each carrying 1,200 migrants, have left for Odisha from Surat.

Covid-19 cases in India have crossed 59,000-mark and death toll due to COVID 19 is nearing 2000-mark. In India, there are 39,834 coronavirus active cases and so far 17,846 COVID-19 positive patients have been cured or discharged. A total of 1981 people died due to the highly contagious virus. In the last 24 hours, India has recorded 3,320 more coronavirus positive cases and 95 deaths.

BJP hits back to Rahul Gandhi over ‘COVID-19 spread’ comment

Hitting back at Rahul Gandhi, who commented that claim that India would lose the battle against Covid-19 if the fight was restricted to the Prime Minister’s Office, The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday accused the senior Congress leader of being out of touch with reality.

“We don’t know which world Rahul Gandhi is living in. The fight against the coronavirus pandemic best exemplifies Team India spirit fostered by PM Narendra Modi. Views and experiences of state governments have largely contributed to the framing and revision of the Central government’s guidelines,” BJP spokesperson GVL Narsimha Rao said.

“Rahul Gandhi is out of touch with reality and out of sync with his own party ruled state governments,” the BJP spokesperson added.

Gandhi also made suggestions related to an economic package, suggesting a cash transfer into everyone’s account as a bailout.
“Call it ‘nyay’ (justice) or call it by any other name but do it,” he urged the central government.
The senior Congress leader had earlier addressed the media on April 16, when he had emphasised that the lockdown was not a solution to defeat Covid-19 but just a pause button.

“The lockdown is not a key, that you switch it on and it’s gone. It requires a number of things to happen. It requires a psychological change. The government needs to understand that it’s not an on-off switch,” he added.

Aurangabad Mishap: Another incident that proves, the poor suffers the most!

At least 15 migrant workers who were sleeping on the railway tracks were mowed down by a goods train carrying petrol and diesel from Nanded to Manmad, at Gadhejalgaon village in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad district on Friday morning.

Five of them escaped with injuries and were rushed to a hospital.

The heart-wrenching incident is just another addition to the list of mishaps that has proved that whatever, be the case, labourers and the poor are the most who suffer during any crisis.

The lockdown has left tens of millions of migrant workers unemployed. They’re often from rural areas but live most of the year in India’s megacities, serving as day laborers, construction workers or domestic help.

Most are thought to have no savings. Many lived in factory dormitories, now shut, and got stranded when the government halted bus and train services during the initial lockdown. They’re most vulnerable to starvation and infection.

Around 230 labourers, who were walking to their villages in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, were stopped by the Kalyan police on Wednesday.The labourers work in companies at Dombivli MIDC and Kalyan. They lived in rented houses provided by the companies. They Said they had no money for food, so they had no other choice but to go back to their villages.

Another incident that reflected their plight is surfing reports of labourers being beaten up by police as they try walking hundreds of miles to their homes. And dozens have also been killed in road accidents en route.

Vizag gas leak: Factory was trying to open post lockdown; rescue ops underway

Five people, including two children, died while over 200 people were hospitalised after a gas leakage from LG Polymers chemical plant in RR Venkatapuram village, Visakhapatnam, in Andhra Pradesh.

The factory was trying to open post lockdown when the incident occurred, DG told media.

Several people were taken to hospital after they complained of a burning sensation in their eyes and breathing difficulties. Around 5000 people have fallen sick following the incident.

Two elderly people and a seven-year-old girl were among the eight who died in the wee hours on Thursday.

Five people were declared brought dead by the King George Hospital Medical Superintendent. Three more died after falling into a canal in Venkatapuram, one of the affected villages. More than 180 people are being treated at the King George Hospital.

Several hundreds of people complained of breathlessness, irritation in eyes and stomach pain following the leakage of gas. People from all villages around the plant have been shifted to safer places.

Footages of the incident show people lying on the roads near the site, possibly unconscious.

The NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed in the area and a rescue operation is under way.

Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy is also scheduled to visit the city and take stock of the situation.

The LG Polymers industry was established in 1961 as Hindustan Polymers for manufacturing polystyrene and its co-polymers in Vizag.

Who was Riyaz Naikoo? Lesser known facts about the slain Hizbul militant

In a major feat, security forces gunned down Kashmir’s most-wanted terrorist and top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Riyaz Naikoo, today. He was killed during an encounter at his native village in Beigpora area in South Kashmir’s Awantipora after a massive search operation.

A joint team of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army’s 55 Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF trapped him Wednesday morning after they launched a search operation in Beighpora following a tip off about the presence of militants in the area.

The slain terrorist was one of the most wanted militants and the government announced a cash reward of Rs 12 lakh for any information leading to him.

Who was Riyaz Naikoo? Here are some facts about him:

Naikoo was a popular teacher in his village. Hailing from Beighpora village in south Kashmir, Naikoo acquired a degree in mathematics and taught the subject at a local school.

On June 1, 2012, the math teacher disappeared. Although his family thought he was harassed and beaten by police, Naikoo was found cradling a gun, when found. In the next five years, he rose up the Hizb ranks and took up the outfit’s operations in the Valley following the killing of Yasin Itoo, a senior Hizbul Mujahideen commander.

The tech-savvy Naikoo turned to social media to communicate.
Riyaz Naikoo came into the limelight in January, 2016 when he arrived during the funeral procession of Shariq Ahmad Bhat, who had been killed in an encounter. Naikoo, who was carrying Kalashnikov rifles, made his way towards Bhat’s body and fired several shots in the air.

Security forces even tracked Riyaz Naikoo love liaisons. An officer said once they tracked down a message to his lover for whom Naikoo wrote “you remind me of the chinar tree”.
Naikoo began uploading photographs of militant recruits on social media, “welcomed the return of Pandits to Kashmir” and described Amarnath pilgrims as “guests”.

Son of a tailor, Riyaz Naikoo once hoodwinked a top officer by saying that he would surrender in 2018. However, he never did.

‘Bois locker room’ case, how to protect kids from cyber crime

With the lockdown affecting the world, and internet utilisation going up, the number of internet-related crimes have seen a significant rise.

The Delhi police cyber cell group on Tuesday was successful in tracking the teenage boys who were accused of planning gang rapes and making derogatory remarks on girls in an Instagram private chat group named ‘Bois locker room’.

The teen, from a well-known Delhi school, has been identified with 20 other boys who were active on the group. His mobile phone has been seized by the Cyber Cell of Delhi Police.

The group which has caused huge outrage since it was exposed on Sunday, is deactivated now.

Long queues outside liquor shops, social distancing goes for a toss

With the comfort in limitations following the new guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs in the third stage of the contagious Coronavirus lockdown, people queued up outside liquor shop in several parts of the country triggering alarm among many.

With centre ordering relaxations, many liquor shops have been observed ignoring some strict guidelines of social distancing.

The government has now permitted these shops to reopen in green, orange, and red zones.(barring the containment Zones). Although, there are restrictions in place and shopkeepers have been instructed to ensure that customers maintain a distance of two metres between each other. These shops (which fall under the non-essential category) will be allowed to stay open until 7 pm.

There are about 70,000 liquor outlets in the country. Companies expect states such as Punjab, Haryana, Assam, and Karnataka to start retailing before other states like Maharashtra, where coronavirus epidemic is at peak. Around 150 liquor shops located in non-containment zones in Delhi has been opened today. Four government-run agencies, which are responsible for the sale of liquor in Delhi, had submitted the list of shops which can be allowed to open following coronavirus guidelines.

Several retailers have expressed concerns that their existing stock may dry-up soon, due to which people are thronging to the liquor shops in huge numbers, flouting of social distancing norms.

Ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide lockdown on March 24, liquor and tobacco shops have remained shut.

With the states registering over 2,000 new cases in last 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 count has crossed the grim milestone of 42,000-mark. The total number of covid-19 cases, the country has climbed to 42,533. The death toll has increased to 1,373 as India recorded 72 deaths in last 24 hours. Both the number of new cases and and fatalities on Sunday were the highest reported in a single day so far.

US will be ready with Corona virus vaccine by year end, assures Trump

Expressing confidence, President Donald Trump has said the US would have a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of the year. Trump’s assurance contradicts claims by health experts who say that a vaccine could take anywhere from 12 to 18 months before it is readily available to the public.

“We think we are going to have a vaccine by the end of this year. We are pushing very hard,” he said.

Johnson & Johnson, which has partnered with the Department of Health and Human Services to manufacture a vaccine, has said it is hoping to get approval for one in early 2021.

Trump insisted he would be happy for another country to beat US researchers to the medicine, saying “if it’s another country I’ll take my hat off.”

“I don’t care, I just want to get a vaccine that works.”

“We’re going to lose anywhere from 75, 80 to 100,000 people. That’s a horrible thing,” said Trump, who as recently on Friday had said he hoped fewer than 100,000 Americans would die and earlier in the week had talked about 60,000 to 70,000 deaths.

Trump, who has been criticized for not moving faster early in the year to stop the spread of the disease, sought to blunt the criticism by blaming China.

The WHO reported that 2,909 people in the U.S. died on Thursday, shattering the previous record of 2,471 deaths reported on April 23rd.

As of Saturday night, the U.S. has more than 1.2 million cases of the coronavirus and more than 66,000 deaths from it, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Covid-9: List of Green, Red and Orange zones in India

As the second phase of lockdown nears its end, the Union Health Ministry has listed 130 districts across the country in the red zone, 284 in the orange zone and 319 in green zones based on the incidence of cases of COVID-19, doubling rate.

India on Friday had a total of 35,043 COVID-19 cases and 1,147 deaths.

The Union Health ministry has written to all the states asking them to demarcate the containment zones and to restrict the movement. According to the letter, all major cities across India including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata are in red zones even as the second spell of lockdown ends on May 3. It also stated that the list will be revised every week.
