The official death toll in northeast Delhi’s riots has risen to 42, as a total of 148 FIRs have been registered following communal riots broke down in the North east Delhi that left the capital shattered in last week.
More than 250 people have been injured in the clashes.
The situation in northeast Delhi was peaceful Saturday morning with residents gradually coming to terms with the damage in communal riots in the area earlier this week. A peace march was organised at Jantar Mantar on Saturday against the communal violence. Slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’, ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ were chanted by hundreds of people who gathered at the place carrying the tricolour. BJP leader Kapil Mishra was also present at the march organised by the Delhi Peace Forum, an NGO.
Meanwhile, breaking silence amid all the ruckus, Union Home Minister Amit Shah blamed the opposition for the situation in the country. In Bhubaneswar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the Opposition of inciting communal riots over the CAA by spreading “misinformation” that Muslims will lose their citizenship because of the new law.
The Central government should immediately take action to bring back peace in New Delhi and stand by victims affected of the violence in the national capital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded after meeting with Union home minister Amit Shah in Bhubaneswar.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the government had set up nine shelters for the riot-hit people and would start distributing Rs 25,000 ex gratia as immediate relief from Saturday to those whose houses had been burnt in the violence.
The Delhi government is considering to issue a WhatsApp number on which people can complain about hate messages being circulated on the instant messaging app in wake of the riots
The areas mainly affected by the riots include Jafrabad, Maujpur, Chand Bagh, Khureji Khas and Bhajanpura.
