Senior Congress leader Madhusudan Mistry will be chairing a six-member screening committee for Haryana Assembly elections.

Other members of the panel appointed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi include Haryana Congress chief Kumari Selja, Congress legislative party leader and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and AICC general secretary state in-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad.

In an official release, party General Secretary K.C. Venugopal said, “Sonia Gandhi has constituted the screening committee for Haryana with Mistry as it’s chairman.

She also named senior party leader Deepa Dasmunshi and Devender Yadav as its members.

With just a month left for the polls, the party is eyeing a major comeback in the state. Sonia formed the committee to decide the party’s candidates for the ensuing elections.

In the 2014 Assembly polls, the BJP won 47 seats and went on to form its government. The Congress could only win 15 seats in the 90-member Assembly. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) had 19 legislators. Since then, the INLD has split into two factions.

The development comes days after Congress named Kumari Selja as the party chief ahead of the elections.

Meamwhile, in another prime turn of events taking place, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) called off its agreement with Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janata Party for the upcoming Haryana Assembly election and decided to field candidates on all seats in the state.

According to the BSP, the agreement reached with Dushyant Chautala for the upcoming Assembly elections in Haryana is inappropriate in terms of the proposed seat-sharing formula, BSP president Mayawati said in a tweet in Hindi, adding that the tie-up is called off.
