In the season of elections in India, across four states and the UT of Puducherry, polling was conducted more or less peacefully in 1,53, 538 polling stations for 475 assembly constituencies in third phase election in Assam and West Bengal and single-phase election in TN, Kerala & the UT of Puducherry.

Polling remained more or less peaceful in Assam. In Tamil Nadu, errors & glitches were reported in EVMs. Allegations of electoral malpractices & Model Code of Conduct violations were also levelled in TN and Puducherry saw highly active polling. In Tamil Nadu, in Coimbatore South constituency, Chief of Makkal Needhi Maiam Kamal Haasan lodged a complaint stating that BJP was distributing cash for votes. Haasan stated that in Kempatti colony, chits were provided which could be exchanged for cash; a complaint for which he said that he had evidence. MNM supremo added that BJP candidate Vanathi Srinivasan could be having links to the electoral malpractice.

All of the 234 assembly seats were in the fray in Tamil Nadu. The contest here is between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance and the incumbent All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

A total of 140 seats witnessed a fierce fight in Kerala between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).

Voters exercised their electoral franchise for the 30 assembly seats in Puducherry, shortly after the Union territory slipped into a political crisis before the elections were announced as the Congress-led government fell due to defections.
