Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee chief Mullapally Ramachandran has expressed his displeasure on the ongoing talks of the party leadership about government formation in Maharashtra with the Shiv Sena.
Assuring that they will wait to see what the drama unfolds ahead, Ramachandran added, “If there is no majority to form a government, then it’s better to sit in the opposition.”
With the top brass of the Kerala state Congress in Delhi finalising the party”s re-jig of office bearers, the Kerala unit is not comfortable with a tie-up with the Shiv Sena. While NCP and Congress are allies in Maharashtra, in Kerala the three NCP legislators are allies of the ruling CPM-led Left and NCP has a state minister.
Kerala leaders are worried about the political risk of supporting Sena which has a hard Hindutva background.
The Congress Working Committee met for two marathon sessions in the morning and evening the last involving the participation of Maharashtra unit leaders, to discuss the political situation in the state.
Sources said Congress leader Sonia Gandhi spoke to Pawarand the discussion saw both sides feel that a power-sharing deal be settled before joining hands.
On Monday, Sonia Gandhi held consultations with top leaders of her party and also spoke to newly elected Maharashtra MLAs, who were stationed in Jaipur. More Congress MLAs are supporting a tie-up with the Shiv Sena – than those opposed to the idea – to keep the BJP out of power.
Though Congress MLAs in Maharashtra favour forming a government with the Sena, the party leadership, especially Sonia Gandhi, is extremely wary of a tie-up with such an ideologically different party, a traditional enemy and one with which it was in direct contest in Mumbai and many regions in Maharashtra in the polls.
